Build a “granny” unit. Most cities and counties not only allow you to build a granny
unit but even encourage it. In California, state law requires that municipalities
permit them as an answer to affordable housing problems. A granny unit can allow
you to live in comfort while you rent out a home you have outgrown. It can provide
temporary housing for other family members or a care taker. Or it can provide a regular
rental income.
Granny units must meet existing building codes and setbacks, but are
very affordable even so. Sizes allowed can vary from 620 sq. ft. to 1200 sq. ft.
